Why did Houston tell Challenger to ignore deadly heat?
In July 1985, eight minutes into launch, Challenger's computer had already shut down one main engine for overheating, and now the right engine was climbing toward the same limit. In Houston, booster engineer Jenny Howard had seconds to decide whether to let the computer act or to block it, with seven people riding on top. What engineers found after the flight is the real answer. Six months later, engineers warned about Challenger once more. Sources: NASA STS 51-F Mission Report (1985); NASA JSC
