Rice breaks ground on research hub in Ion District
Rice University officials celebrated the groundbreaking for a new research and office building in the Ion District.

Rice University started construction on a new research facility in Midtown Houston to expand the local technology and innovation ecosystem. University leaders, board members, and industry partners gathered for a formal groundbreaking ceremony to mark the launch of the major development.
Known as the Arc, the seven-story building will span nearly 200,000 square feet and provide flexible laboratory and office spaces. The facility sits adjacent to the existing Ion building on Main Street within the university innovation district.
The hub will connect academic research talent with industries working on major global challenges, helping move laboratory discoveries into practical, real world applications more rapidly.
Rice University will occupy about 80,000 square feet as a lead tenant in the new structure, accounting for roughly forty percent of the total space. University president Reginald DesRoches said the hub will connect academic research talent with industries working on major global challenges, helping move laboratory discoveries into practical, real world applications more rapidly.
Officials designed the building to accommodate companies focusing on artificial intelligence, data science, robotics, quantum science, and clean energy. Kelly Fox, executive vice president for operations, finance, and support at Rice University, said strong tenant demand for space motivated the expansion after the initial flagship building nearly reached full capacity, noting that the facility offers sophisticated infrastructure for growing firms.
The development will feature modern amenities including conference rooms, an amenity lounge, an outdoor plaza, underground parking, bike storage, and on-site retail and dining options. Construction on the project is scheduled for completion in the second quarter of 2028, according to project developers.
The project represents the largest expansion of the innovation corridor since the original Ion building opened in 2021 inside a former department store building. Project partners expect the new structure to foster deeper collaboration among startups, investors, and corporate tenants.
